If you’re driving around with a dodgy towbar, you’re a considerable risk on the road. With frequent or inappropriate use, a towbar will be subjected to wear and tear. So, what are the signs it’s time for a new towbar? How often should you check and replace it? Read on to find out more.

How often do you use your towbar?

If you use your towbar often, especially for heavy loads, it’s a good idea to have it checked regularly. If you’re hauling a trailer or caravan full-time, for example, you’ll want to inspect or get your towbar checked by a professional regularly. If your towbar is only used occasionally, it’s less of a concern as long as the towbar is kept in good working order, however if you are embarking on a long trip, consider this as part of your pre-departure checklist..

What are the signs, my towbar needs replacing?

If your towbar is rusting, loose or coming apart, it’s time to replace it. Damaged towbars are a danger on the road and are a contributing factor in many towing crashes.

Ensure your towbar is fit for purpose

You cannot use a standard or light duty towbar to tow heavy loads such as caravans, boats and horse floats. Always ensure you know the weight capacity of your towbar and use it accordingly.
